International Students
Elmcrest College welcomes the opportunity to be of service in providing education to international students. Before proceeding through the entire application process the student should first determine the acceptability of the qualifications they hope to earn at Elmcrest College in the country/countries they plan to apply them in. If the program chosen by the student has post-graduate independent 3rd party registration or certification requirements then the student should first confirm their eligibility as a non-resident to apply for such registrations and/or certifications.
The responsibility for obtaining all of the required government clearances to attend a program at Elmcrest College, including a student visa, is the sole responsibility of the student. Elmcrest has attempted to identify some of the general student visa rules as it broadly understands them but Elmcrest accepts no responsibility for their accuracy since they have no control over their application to each student’s case. It is therefore the responsibility of the student to confirm these details in advance with the appropriate government authorities.
When Elmcrest issues an Unconditional Letter of Acceptance to a student, they are effectively blocking off a seat in a class of very limited controlled size. Due to the additional challenges and government requirements that international students must meet before they can provide an unconditional guarantee of their attendance, all of the requirements under this section must be satisfied at least 60 days prior to the first day of class or the Unconditional letter will be revoked at that time. This is necessary in order to give Elmcrest a reasonable opportunity to fill the seat with another student.
In order for an Unconditional Letter of Acceptance to be granted to an applicant, the student must meet the following requirements:
- Submit an Application for Admission along with the application fee of $100 CDN (in Canadian funds). International students from countries other than the United States and some Commonwealth countries will not be granted a student visa by Canadian immigration authorities unless tuition fees are paid in full prior to applying for the visa. However, it is highly recommended that all applicants pay their tuition in full in order to expedite the process. If a student visa is denied, all monies with the exception of the application fee of $100 will be refunded in full.
- If the applicant has a diploma or degree from another country outside of Canada, or the United States the applicant must have their academic credentials formally assessed to determine equivalency to Ontario educational standards. World Education Services will conduct an assessment for a fee. If you were educated in the United States an official transcript must be submitted to the college.
- For those whose first language is not English OR who have not been educated at an English language school OR who live in a country where English is not the only official language, a score of 550 on the TOEFL paper test, 213 on the TOEFL computer test or 78–79 on the TOEFL Internet test is required. An IELTS equivalent of 6.5 is also acceptable. International students who did attend an English language school are required to provide proof.
- Submission of a photocopy of a government issued picture ID with the applicant’s signature. This ID must be presented to the Registrar upon the applicant's arrival at the college.
- Submission of an up-to-date résumé that includes, at a minimum, the students educational and employment background.
- One Original Letter of Reference (submitted by persons not related to the applicant and who have known the applicant for at least one year).
- A 500 word letter for consideration is required which outlines:
- How long have you been considering taking your program of choice
- Why you want to pursue a career in this field
- What personal characteristics you possess that will make you successful in this field
- What you would like to do upon graduation
- In addition, please provide a 50 word handwritten paragraph on why you want to study in Canada.
- For all programs, with the exception of Spa Management
, a note signed and dated by a medical doctor stating that you are “In good health and free from communicable disease” is required. In addition, the applicant must receive a letter stating the above from a physician who is licensed to practice in Canada before they attend class. This letter must be written no earlier then 30 days prior to the commencement of the program.
If any one of the first seven items is not submitted to the college, a Conditional Letter of Acceptance may be issued which may hinder the applicant’s ability to receive a student visa to study at the college.
